Obituary for David Mark Zartman

David Mark Zartman, 83, of Bloomville, passed away at 7:10 a.m., Saturday, August 17, 2019 at the Volunteers of America Autumnwood Care Center in Tiffin.

David was born October 2, 1935 in Upper Sandusky, to the late John and Lucille (Philbrick) Zartman. He married Dolores A. Weber on July 20, 1958 and she passed away on January 30, 1968.

Survivors include a son, Kevin M. Zartman of Tiffin, two grandchildren, Breanna Lyn (Brandon) Biller of Tiffin, Jordan Riley Zartman of Fostoria, a great-granddaughter, Riley Mae Zartman of Tiffin, a sister, Jeanne Becker of Tiffin, a brother-in-law, Carl Weber of Norwalk and a sister-in-law, Anita (Ron) Rush of Findlay.

David was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Paul Lantz, his wife, Dolores, a nephew, Randie Green and a brother-in-law, Robert Becker.

David was a 1953 graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School, a 1957 graduate from Heidelberg College with an AB degree and later received his Masters in Education from BGSU in 1970. While at Heidelberg he was a member of the Excelsior Men's Society, the Beta Beta Beta, a charter member of the Alumni H-Association selection committee, a member of National Alumni Council, a member of the Heritage Society, a member of Medallion Club, a member of Friends of Heidelberg Music. David received the Alumni Citation in 1997, the Alumni Service Award in 2007, and the Heidelberg Leaders and Legends Award at Basketball Alumni Day in 2012. He was also a former member of the Heidelberg Presidential Fellows Organization.

During the summers in the 1960's, David worked at Camp Pittenger. His interest in camping goes back to the days as member of Tiffin Boy Rangers and sessions at Camp Hertzer and camping at Pittenger. In high school David worked in the kitchen at Camp Pittenger and was in charge of maintenance. He also worked as camp manager from 1967 to 1969.

David worked as a Plant Pathologist at Yoder Brothers Inc. in Ashtabula from 1957 until 1962 and then worked as a Teacher and Bus Driver at Bloomville Elementary School from 1963 until 1991, where he was named Teacher of the Year in 1990.

David was a past member and President of Seneca County Easter Seal Society, past board member of Tiffin - Seneca United Way, a member of Allen Eiry Senior Center, past member and chair of the Mercy Hospital Advisory Board, past member of the Bloomville Interaction Council, a member of the Humane Society of Seneca County, past member of the Tiffin Rangers Board of Directors, a member of Seneca County Retired Teachers Organization, ORTA, OEA- Ret., and the NEA-Ret, secretary of the Tiffin Columbian Class of 1953, a member of the Friends of Seneca County Park District where he was a volunteer at Garlo Park.

David was a charter member of the Bloomville Lions Club where he served in all offices except treasurer. He served on the District 13-B cabinet as Zone Chairman, District Youth Chair, District Leadership Chair, District Diabetes Awareness Chair, Cabinet Secretary, District Newsletter Contest Chair, District Extension Chair, District Campus Club Chair, and was a Melvin Jones Fellow. David was the recipient of International President's Certificate of Appreciation in 2002 and was an inductee into the District 13-B Lions Hall of Fame in 2011.

David was also a Masonic Member of Seneca Lodge #790, a 32 degree Mason, Valley of Toledo, past president and former secretary of Seneca County Scottish Rite Association, a member of Zenobia Shrine Temple, a member and past secretary of the Tiffin Shrine Club and received the Meritorious Service Award from the Ohio Council of Deliberation of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Ohio in Cincinnati in June of 2008.

David served ten years on the Bloomville Village Council and was the former Chairman of the Village Tree Committee. He served as Mayor of village for six months, a former member of the board of public affairs, a member of Seneca County Republican Party Central and Executive Committees and a former party treasurer.

David was a patron of the Arts which goes back to his time in Ashtabula, where he was a member of the Ashtabula Civic Theatre and appeared in Arsenic and Old Lace, Charlie's Aunt and Anastasia. David directed plays at school and enjoyed going to the Ritz, Star Theatre, Bucyrus Little Theatre, and the Stranahan. David also directed class plays at Bloomville High School and grade school plays after Bloomville High School was a grade school. David was a former member of the Bloomville United Church of Christ and the Bloomville United Methodist church. He was a current member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Tiffin, where he served on church council.

Funeral services for David will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at the Lindsey-Shook Funeral Home, 3085 S. St. Rt. 19, Bloomville with the Rev. Kurt Schaller-Blaufuss officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, from 4-8 p.m., at the funeral home. There will be a Lions Club service held at 7:30 p.m., and a Masonic service held at 7:50 p.m. also on Wednesday. Burial will follow the services on Thursday, at Woodlawn cemetery.
