E. Mardelle Barrell, 92, of Republic, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at the Volunteers of America Autumnwood Care Center in Tiffin.
Mardelle was born on April 2, 1929, in Republic to the late Earl H. and Doris F. (Miller) Fretz. She married Richard D. Barrell at St. Jacob’s United Church of Christ in Republic, on August 13, 1950, and he survives in Tiffin.
Mardelle is survived by her children, Cindy (Jim) Voorhees of Republic and Glenwood (Andrea) Barrell of Tiffin, eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a brother, David (Jan) Fretz of Republic.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Debra Barrell, three great-great grandchildren and a brother, James Fretz.
Mardelle worked as a grade school teacher at Bloomville, Scipio-Republic and Hopewell-Loudon Schools and she was always considered everyone’s favorite teacher. She and her husband Richard also worked for the Scipio Twp. mowing the cemeteries. She was a 1947 graduate of Scipio-Republic High School and later Bowling Green State University. She was a member and church organist at St. Jacob’s UCC Church in Republic, a former Grange member, and sang and played in the New Gospel Tones, and in the Gospel Heirs, which played at many of the local nursing homes. She also was a member of the Scipio-Republic Historical Society.
There will be a celebration of Richard and Mardelle's life at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 5, 2022 at St. Jacob's United Church of Christ with Pastor Darla Metz officiating. Visitation for friends and family will also be held on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m., until the time of the service at the church. There will be no burial held at this time. The Lindsey-Shook Funeral Home in Bloomville is assisting the family with their arrangements.
